The Main (Gardner) Stacks contains Doe Library’s research collections and is reserved as a primary study area for UC Berkeley students and faculty. The perimeter of the bookstacks in Hatcher North is a treasure trove of study space. All seating is on the south end of each floor and near windows offering plenty of natural light. The windows on the basement floor are slightly smaller since it sits at ground level. The main reading room greets visitors with a soaring domed ceiling that would make Renaissance architects slow-clap with appreciation.The librarystaff move through this bibliophile’s paradise with the quiet confidence of people who know they’re custodians of something precious. Due to construction, the MainStacks in Melville Library will close on Thursday, October 10 at 5 PM, and remain closed through Sunday, October 13. During this time, no access to materials housed in the MainStacks will be available.
